Kopia Backend

Kopia is the open-source backup engine that powers Web.Casa’s backup system. It provides encrypted, deduplicated, incremental backups.

Kopia CLI is required for backups to function. Web.Casa offers two installation paths:

  1. Auto-install from panel — click the install button in Backup > Settings and Web.Casa downloads and configures Kopia automatically.
  2. Manual install — install Kopia CLI yourself via your system’s package manager or from the official Kopia releases.

After installation, Web.Casa detects the Kopia binary automatically. No additional path configuration is needed.

Kopia uses a content-addressable storage model:

  1. Files are split into content-defined chunks.
  2. Each chunk is compressed and encrypted before storage.
  3. Identical chunks are stored only once (deduplication).
  4. Subsequent backups only transfer new or changed chunks (incremental).

This architecture makes backups fast and storage-efficient, even for large datasets.

A repository is the encrypted container where all backup data is stored. It is initialized once when you first configure a backup target.

Supported repository backends:

BackendDescription
Local FilesystemDirectory on a local or mounted disk
S3 / MinIOS3-compatible object storage
WebDAVNetwork-attached storage or cloud drives
SFTPRemote server via SSH

See Backup Configuration for detailed setup instructions for each target.

  • All backup data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM at rest
  • Encryption happens before data leaves the server
  • The repository password is set during initialization and is required for all future access

Save your repository password in a separate, secure location. If you lose access to Web.Casa, you will need this password to restore backups directly with Kopia CLI. There is no password recovery mechanism.

From the Web.Casa panel, you can monitor and maintain the repository:

  • Repository statistics — total size, snapshot count, deduplication ratio
  • Integrity verification — validate that stored data is uncorrupted
  • Maintenance tasks — compaction and garbage collection to reclaim space

Kopia is managed entirely through the Web.Casa interface. The panel handles:

  • Repository initialization and connection
  • Snapshot creation on schedule or on demand
  • Retention enforcement based on your configured policies
  • Restore operations from any available snapshot

You do not need to interact with the Kopia CLI directly unless performing advanced troubleshooting.
